Flower Care Guide: How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer

There is nothing better than bringing home a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers.

Whether you've received flowers as a gift, purchased a bouquet for yourself, or created your own arrangement, proper flower care can dramatically increase the life of your blooms.

As florists, one of the most common questions we're asked is:

"How do I make my flowers last longer?"

The good news is that a few simple steps can make a big difference.

Start with a Clean Vase

Before placing flowers in water, wash your vase thoroughly.

Bacteria is one of the biggest causes of premature flower deterioration. A clean vase helps keep water fresh and flowers healthier for longer.

Recut the Stems

Using sharp secateurs or scissors, trim approximately 2-3 centimetres from the bottom of each stem at an angle.

This helps flowers absorb water more efficiently.

Remove Lower Leaves

Any leaves sitting below the water line should be removed.

Leaves submerged in water break down quickly and encourage bacterial growth.

Change Water Regularly

Fresh water is essential.

Replace the water every two to three days and rinse the vase if possible.

Keep Flowers Cool

Avoid placing flowers:

• In direct sunlight
• Near heaters
• Close to air conditioners
• Beside fruit bowls

Fruit releases ethylene gas which can shorten flower life.

Use Flower Food

Flower food provides nutrients while helping reduce bacteria.

If flower food is supplied with your bouquet, use it according to the instructions.
